da roleta: Everton loanee Lewis Warrington is ‘thriving’ at Tranmere Rovers and has ‘massive potential’, reports The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, and he is now in discussions to extend his ‘deal at Everton’.
The lowdown
da betcris: Warrington has come through the academy ranks at Everton, having joined the club at the age of six.
The 19-year-old is a season-ticket holder at Goodison Park and considers former Toffees left-back Leighton Baines his idol.
The ‘all-round midfielder’ has made a total of 20 appearances for Everton at Under-23 level but in January, the club decided to give him a taste of the men’s game.
They loaned him out to Micky Mellon’s Tranmere, who are fighting for promotion to League One.
Significantly, Warrington’s Everton contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.
The latest
Boyland says that Warrington has been shining during his stint across Merseyside at Preston Park.
He’s spoken to Tranmere sporting director and former Everton striker James Vaughan, who claims the Birkenhead-born talent has ‘massive potential’.
And he ponders whether the youngster can force his way into Frank Lampard’s ‘toiling’ midfield.
Warrington is in talks over extending his ‘deal at Everton’, but he’ll need to see a path to first-team football with The Toffees before he commits.
In the meantime, he’s attracting interest from other clubs, meaning he’s ‘unlikely to be short’ of rival offers.
The verdict
Warrington has nailed down a spot in Mellon’s side, starting their last ten League Two matches.
He ranks among the top six players in the squad for both tackles (1.5) and shots (1.2) per 90 minutes, and that speaks to his rounded skill-set.
Indeed, Warrington has operated as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder and an attacking midfielder at different points of his loan spell.
If The Toffees successfully extend his deal but allow Fabian Delph, who’s also out of contract in the summer, to leave, then that could theoretically open up a spot in Lampard’s senior ranks for the boyhood fan.
In other news, Everton are willing to sell this attacker.
