It really has been a fall from grace for Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Tripper this season, hasn’t it?
He appeared to be destined for so much after an impressive World Cup campaign with England last summer, however, things never really got going for the defender he had a number of moments that would be better left in the past – which led to him being snubbed for the upcoming Nations League finals (Goal).
The right-back played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s disappointing Champions League final defeat, and although he was not bad defensively as he has been in some of the club’s other crucial matches throughout the season, his attacking performance left plenty to be desired.
But, it might be his actions following the conclusion of the game that may have had everyone talking and it could be what he is last seen doing in a Tottenham shirt on the pitch.
Trippier went over to the travelling Spurs contingent and appeared to be saying his goodbyes to the fans, or at least that’s what it seemed like (Twitter).
Maybe he was just apologising for their failure to bring the trophy to north London, but with the transfer rumours he has had his name involved in recently, we’ll imagine it was the former of the two options.
Reports have linked him with a move to Napoli, whilst there has been a report in Italy suggesting that he could be playing his football on a regular basis at the Wanda Metropolitano next season as Atletico Madrid are allegedly keen on him.
So, maybe he is just looking to get a feel of what it would be like to jump into the stands if he manages to score for the La Liga side?
If it is not to be his last appearance as a Tottenham player, Trippier’s performances are going to need to be a helluva lot better next season.
