With West Brom’s promotion hopes coming to a bitter end against Aston Villa last Tuesday, the club are targeting Chris Hughton as their next manager, per a report from The Telegraph.
Hughton has only recently been sacked by Brighton despite keeping his side in the Premier League, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be out of management for long.
The 60-year-old has a good record in the Championship, achieving promotion with both Newcastle and the Seagulls, so he could be the ideal appointment for the Baggies.
Albion got rid of Darren Moore back in March but stumbled over appointing a new permanent boss. Jimmy Shan was then given the reins until the end of the season but unfortunately for Albion couldn’t oversee promotion.
Now with the club lining up their replacement, Football FanCast writers have given their verdicts on whether Hughton would be a good fit at the Hawthorns. Here’s what they’ve said.
James Beavis:
“It’s a bit of a catch 22 situation for West Brom. Appointing Chris Hughton would fix one of their biggest issues – their defence – but they would pay the price from an attacking point of view at the same time if Brighton’s displays this term are anything to go by. That said, Mark Jenkins isn’t silly and will be aware that the 60-year-old knows the Championship well and has been promoted from the division on two occasions. Perhaps Albion need that safe pair of hands to get them up, and they can always change things once they get to the Premier League.”
Harry Sherlock:
“Chris Hughton, at the very least, deserves a job. One can understand why Brighton decided to go another way but Hughton is perhaps the archetypal Championship manager and could almost guarantee West Brom a play-off position next season. He’s available and there’s no compensation involved; it’s a bit of a no-brainer.”

Billy Meyers:
“Chris Hughton would be an excellent appointment for West Brom. He has proven that he can get teams out of the Championship and keep them in the Premier League, whilst he is a true gentleman and someone the Hawthorns faithful would immediately warm to. If the Baggies want a speedy return to the top-flight, this is a decision they should make.”
