da leao: According to a new report from Mundo Deportivo, the new Barcelona coach, Quique Setien, wants Arturo Vidal to stay at the club despite interest from some of the European giants.
What’s the word, then?
da brdice: It seems that the new coach is already making changes within the Catalan club and the midfield veteran is set to stay at Barcelona and be a part of the gaffer’s squad.
Setien believes that Vidal’s player profile – which is more physical than technical, as Mundo Deportivo note – could really come in handy for the Blaugrana further down the line.
Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?
The same outlet informs that the 32-year-old Chilean will stay in Catalonia at least until June, and his future will be re-assessed in the summer.
This could come as a big blow to both Inter Milan and Manchester United, who were reportedly showing great interest in the player earlier in the window, as stated by Herman Chanampa on Directv Chille (via Sport Witness).
Verdict
On the face of things, Vidal certainly hasn’t been the most important part of Barcelona’s current squad as Ernesto Valverde mostly used him as an impact sub from the bench.
In the 2019/20 La Liga campaign, the Chilean has been a starter in just four out of a possible 18 games, which may have affected his transfer value. Some sources have reported recently that he could be snatched away for as little as £13m.
But even with all of that being said, Vidal still managed to become Barcelona’s highest goal-scorer apart from the forward trident of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann, putting his name into lights for everyone to notice.
And it seems that the right people have done exactly that.
His new coach reportedly wants him to stay and it will be interesting to see just what kind of a role Setien has envisioned for Vidal.
But as of this moment, neither Man United nor Inter Milan will be able to land their man this January.
