da esport bet: Speaking to talkSPORT, Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said that he took a gamble when deciding to sign Conor Gallagher on loan back in the summer.
The Addicks managed to secure the Chelsea midfielder – who was named as the 2018/19 Academy Player of the Year at Stamford Bridge – on a season-long loan deal.
Intriguingly, Gallagher had never played a minute of senior first-team football before arriving at The Valley, despite being named on the Blues’ bench for their Europa League final win over Arsenal.
What did Bowyer say?
The 42-year-old told talkSPORT: “For us it was a bit of a gamble; he had never been on loan anywhere before and is only 19 so he’s still learning the game. But he’s hit the ground running.
“Whatever you tell him he does and I just keep encouraging him to get in the box, and things are falling for him at the moment. His willingness and work rate are unreal, so he’s fitted in really well.
“He’s still learning though – he needs to learn – but he’s been a great addition for us.”
Bowyer’s transfer gamble paid off
It goes without saying that signing Gallagher was a gamble.
Charlton could’ve done as much research as humanely possible when weighing up whether or not to sign the Blues starlet, but they would still have had no way of knowing how the 19-year-old would fare in senior football.
It really was sink or swim, and he has done the latter.
Four goals and an assist in just ten Championship starts is a start to be proud of for the teenager.
His efforts have also seen him win the EFL Young Player of the Month award for August, while Gallagher was also handed a maiden call-up to the England U21 squad as a result of his fine form so far this term.
It was, without a doubt, a risk to bring such a young, untested player to The Valley back in the summer, but Bowyer’s big transfer gamble has paid off to say the least – the Addicks and Gallagher himself are definitely reaping the rewards of it right now.
