da poker: Phil Jagielka is confident that Everton are still in the race for Champions League qualification.
da dobrowin: The Toffees secured a 2-2 draw with fellow top four hopefuls Tottenham on Sunday, a result which leaves them six points adrift of booking a spot in Europe’s top club competition for next season.
Their result at White Hart Lane could have been even more rewarding had Gylfi Sigurdsson not knocked home a late equaliser to cancel out Kevin Mirallas’ second-half strike.
Everton have a game in hand over Spurs, and Jagielka is confident that they are still in the race for a top four finish:
“We know we need a lot of help from teams around us, either taking points off each other or a shock result coming in. But we’ll take that,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.
“We’ve not been in as good a position in the league for a long time – we’re usually chasing fifth or sixth – so it’s nice to have gone up a level and as much as we’re delighted with the point we’d have loved to have three.
“But we’ll go on to next week’s game and keep the chase on for as long as possible.”
The Merseysiders have been in the upper echelons of the table for the most part of the season, dispelling their tag as slow starters with a positive opening to the campaign.
Although their form dipped a little through the mid point of the season, David Moyes’ men are back to their best, claiming back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Stoke prior to their draw with Tottenham.
