Werner is seen as one of the most highly-rated strikers in Europe, and could be signed for £27million due to a buy-out clause inserted in the four-year contract he penned in the summer.

The Red Devils have also sent scouts to watch Werner in action at each of his appearances this term, and they would have seen the 28-cap international hit nine goals in ten Bundesliga outings, plus two in three in the Champions League and two in two in the DFB Pokal.
Liverpool are thought to want to sign Werner next year, but Jurgen Klopp’s compatriot would face a fight for minutes with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – United believe the opportunity for greater game-time at Old Trafford could give them an advantage.
